I enjoyed "Touched." Campbell puts the reader in the middle of a world unfamiliar to many of us but real nevertheless. It's not complex, but makes a solid, entertaining light read that gives a clear picture of the world as it some years ago and, unfortunately remains today in too many places. Campbell is familiar with the situation she writes about and you will learn from this book.Product details

Touched edition by Darlene Campbell Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
One of my favorites from Darlene.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and the heartfelt way Darlene tells the story of Frankie. It is true to life, even though it is set in an earlier time period than now, and everyone who reads it should be inspired by this young man who wants more out of life than what he sees around him.
Highly intuitive, Frankie Keilman is a gifted artist who sees people for their inner character. In a small town filled with pretentious church-goers and gossips, he discovers he is the odd-man-out. Frankie knows he's not like everyone else and he goes to great links to "fit-in", to please his mother, to earn his father's approval and to be liked by others, that is until he meets Ellie McThacker and her older brother, Mickey. Ellie and Mickey are the local bootlegger's children. Torn between pleasing his family and doing what he thinks is spiritually right, Frankie must choose whether or not he will be true to his gifting; the choice could cost him everything, even his life. As Frankie sets out on his road to self-discovery, he uncovers muderous lies, deciets and webs of extortion that could rip his community apart.
The linguistic authenticity is what captivated me most about this novel. Set in rural Kentucky around 1960, the characters' dialogue is so convincing that I felt I knew those people, like they were the very people I knew as a child. The author creates a very real world, rich with sensory detail and emotional depth. My favorite moment is when Frankie discovers the identify of the woman Mickey McThacker loves. It's both funny and touching.
